In 1991, the charity that would become Hope House Children’s Hospice was formed and launched an incredible fundraising campaign that raised the £1.5 million needed to build a children’s hospice at Morda, near Oswestry, in Shropshire. Building started in 1993 and in Hope House opened its doors in October 1995 as only the tenth children’s hospice in the world.
Hope House Children’s Hospices want to ensure children affected by conditions so serious that they are not expected to live longer than early adulthood enjoy the best possible quality of life alongside their families and with access to specialist care and bereavement support, when and where they need it. As well as the children living with a terminal illness, Hope House also ensure the families and loved ones are supported and that nobody faces the death of a child in their life alone.
In their first full year, Hope House supported 80 families and the number of people supported has only ever grown. By 2018, the hospices at Oswestry and Tŷ Gobaith (near Conwy), cared for 400 children and supported 900 families at home or through counselling and bereavement support. They now support more than 750 local families who are either caring for a terminally ill child, or whose child has died.
The work of Hope House Children’s Hospices is inspirational, and the charity is held in high regard across Shropshire, Powys, Cheshire and North Wales for the impact they make. To provide the care and support services to children and families that Hope House does costs £6.5 million every year – with 86% of this is spent on care. Approximately one month’s income comes from statutory sources which mean Hope House is dependent upon public support to fund their vital efforts for the other 11 months of the year.
While they are supporting so many, Hope House recognise that they can support even more children, parents, siblings and loved ones across this area. To achieve this, they aim to increase annual income from £2.5m to £9m by 2025. The new Relationship Development Manager will play an important role in this growth as they develop and implement an engagement program for existing donors and lottery players. The Relationship Development Manager will lead by example and engage via phone and email to support a team of Engagement Officers in increasing retention amongst lottery players, engaging current donors to support more frequently through regular giving, and encourage individuals to raise more money through sponsorship and participation in fundraising events.
As the Relationship Development Manager, you will demonstrate a successful record of increasing income through engagement with various donor groups and income streams, and you must know the current fundraising landscape. You will develop, plan and implement an annual programme of innovative and professional individual giving programmes that deliver income growth in line with the overarching fundraising strategy. Leadership and management are key in this position and you must demonstrate a track record of individual and team management. You must lead by example and have a passion for the cause. To be successful in this role, you will build strong and sustainable relationships and be creative in approaches to engagement. To support this, you must have strong written and verbal communication skills. Effective communication will be critical, and you must have meticulous attention to detail.
